dudes. holy good skiing the the last couple of days. i get so stoked hearing guys at the nordic center who have obviously skied here for many years and who still comment on how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place with such fantastic trails right out our back door. Ok..maybe not litterly out our back door...but pretty dam close...regardless, its just nice to see that people don't take it totally for granted.

Cold and windy...Feb-19th, 2009

Interesting note on weather and ice: last year we had our "last" winter surf on Feb. 21st before the lake froze up for a month...this year we have been iced in and surfless since the beginning of January...ouch....but tons of good neige.

Essence

Directed by Daniel Leeb of Cinecycle Productions.

"This short film features Alfred Bobe Jr. and Fatimah Durkee. The film spins a visual ballad between the two cyclists experiencing the city in their own unique ways. Both cyclists are city dwellers who amidst the chaos of the concrete jungle have created a private and peaceful psychological space as they traverse the streets. They are both alone and yet they are both very much aware of each others presence. The film speaks to the harmony with one's environment that can be found while riding a bicycle in a city and the synchronistic connection we can have with those we have not even met. The short was commissioned by Hutchinson tires."

And to keep things a little on the fishy side...steel.

Back to winter after some freakish rain and well above freezing temps that stuck me in a crappy mood until things turned around on Thursday. Fresh snow, some sunshine and some training for the Sleeping Giant Loppet this weekend made up for mother natures nonsense last week. My folks came out from the prairies and Erv, Sue and Stella (the elder boykin) from MN and we mostly skied it up and had an all 'round festive weekend with the only bummer being Nances heel blisters (anyone know of nordic boots for a gal with AA (narrow) heels). And since today was a holiday aka 'Family Day', it made the weekend all that much better. A'ight...some shots.

Freshness

View of Sleepy G. on Sunday morning

Ole timers crushing another climb and smiling about it.

Licheny white pine

The ever attentive and never rambunctious Lutsen...ha. as if.

..."the thing about Nature: make one lousy rule to describe it and it'll contradict you even if it has to transmogrify and metamorphosize and bust its ass to do it. And so what? If anybody grew wise enough to grasp the real immutable laws of Nature, Nature'd only rear back and strike'em dead before they got anybody to understand them."
- Glum Gus, The River Why.

Rainin'?! What in the...February 9th in northwestern Ontario and rain. Explain that. See, how laser fast the skiing will be after this is done with.

The weekend...eat, ski, eat, ski, eat, merriment, dominoes, sleep, repeat.

Some of the best weather yet this winter. Stopped on my way home, just as the sun was setting along the northshore to capture the purple and orange sky over what little open water there is out there on the lake.
