After a winter of pretty thin, but adequate snow conditions..we finally got thrashed by a quality Alberta clipper today & this evening. Barring a heat wave, this should help in keeping us skiing right through March. Had a fun time playin outside after dinner with O and N. Quality.

Crankset...check.
The Surly- 'Mr.Whirly'crankset that will go on the Surly Ogre..when it arrives in April.

Had fun yankin lake whitefish with dad on sunday...what a great day. unreal weather and enough fish to keep the smoker blazin, plus several meals of baked whitefish.

Tools

been keying in on skiing, being healthy and all the other good things life provides, which unfortunately has put the sitting at the computer in the evenings lower down on the list of priorities. so be it. keep getting out there and pushin it folks.

Gettin my siphon on here, while Lutsen looks on. Well actually this was a couple of weeks ago. Pretty soon i'll dry hop this badboy and then bottle 'er up a couple days later.

Ordered up one of these this afternoon...well the frameset, the rest i'll build up with mostly non stock parts. Stoked!! Would have been sick (as in awesome) to splurge for a fatbike...just hard to justify using one as a daily commuter.

Between the skiing, running and other day to day fatherly duties, i've finally busted out the tools and some wood and gotten to work again. Nice to tune up some edges and rattle off some projects. Here i'm using a Mora Erik Frost 162 double sided hook knife while the Ashley Iles gouge stands by, along with a small Mora carving knife.

Diggin this:

And pumped for my old Uncle Erv at 69years young, who rode to the finish of the Arrowhead 135 ultra-marathon in 37hrs55min in Northern Minnesota on his Pugsley this week. Deadly.
Stay young folks.

The latest grain/malt/hop/yeast concoction is a dark one. Northern Brewers 'Black IPA'. Which as they say, is...'an ebony brew with a beige head that is surrounded by an aromatic citrus-and-pine force field, backed by a smooth roastiness redolent of cocoa and French roast coffee'. The yeasties are nearly done their first round of fermentation; at which point the whole lot will be siphoned into the secondary fermenter. The final product should pack a hoppy punch, just the way we like it.

Nice lookin winter whitetail

Always stoked on this magazine. The folks at Superior Outdoors Magazine do a beautiful job of laying out a mag that captures the adventure, spirit and beauty that is so prevalent in the Lake Superior watershed. Make your way to a local retailer or go online and scoop a copy of the 2012 Winter edition. Plenty of good reading and some stellar photo's.

I snapped these shots of the mag...but here are the
Real Photo Creds:

Top Left: Bryan Hansel-winter kayaking cover shot

Bottom Left: Marlin Lendin- a story about ridin his Pugsley 100 miles on Lake Superior

Top Right: Eric Berglund- you can probably guess what it's about.

Bottom Right: Eric Berglund- skiin some fresh trackset last winter.

You can kind of see part of a shot by Darren McChristie of a dude catching air kiteboarding.

Anyways. Get out there and have a good weekend.

Snow was coming down in big flakes and the conditions were rocket.

Five of seven or eight chariots lined up on a sunday morning at Kamview. We dig winter.

"da Blunt"

After much contemplation, some humming and hawing and several emails back and forth with Tom Neilson over the last year, i finally settled on a new sled. This stubby, wide and thick, slightly concaved hull, stringerless epoxy stick should put me into just about any wave round here. Combine that with a quad setup with Futur Fins or the single 8'' Greenough 4A and it'll be a badass allrounder. Just need some waves.

mmmmm yeah. Happy New Years all. Into the fifth year here at the fresh aspect and back at er after a christmas hiatus. Here are a some snaps from the last couple of weeks.

Lynx canadensis.

Pulled into our blueberry haunt for a pit stop on the way back to Winnipeg and came across this critter, who didn't seem to be too concerned with our abrupt arrival. Here he or she is slinking off after we had a chance to get a good look.

The new sled.

More on this later. But i will say it's hand crafted by Tom Neilson down in Cocoa Beach, Florida. 6'8'' 23&1/4''wide and 3'' thick, with multiple fin possibilities. Should be a dealdy slider for the lake.

A rack of freshly smoke Lake Superior herring.

As good as it gets.

To those in the northern hemisphere...
Happy Winter Solstice.

Short days and long nights, but plenty of goodness to be had in this season. Get out there and find a way to enjoy it.
