Stand out spots were just too burly, no way to paddle out into 20'+ swell on Lake Superior in 40knot winds. No channel, no current and a 10 second period. Still, some sizable sets were found even under more sheltered conditions. What a day!!

"Yesterday's 28.20" (955 mb) low pressure reading in Minnesota breaks not only the 28.28" (958 mb) previous "USA-interior-of-the-continent-record" from Cleveland, Ohio during the Great Ohio Storm of Jan. 26, 1978 (a lower reading in Canada during this event bottomed out at an amazing 28.05"/950 mb), but also the lowest pressure ever measured anywhere in the continental United States aside from the Atlantic Coast. The modern Pacific Coast record is 28.40" (962mb) at Quillayute, Washington on Dec. 1, 1987. An older reading, taken on a ship offshore from the mouth of the Umpqua River in Oregon during the famous "Storm King" event on January 9, 1880, is tied with yesterday's 28.20" (955 mb.)

So, the famed storm that sank the ore carrier Edmund Fitzgerald in 1974, , was weaker than the current storm."

Headed back down the shore on Saturday morning expecting the surf to still be pumping. Though it wasn't the hollow overhead glassy pit of perfection that some doodze scored down in Duluth, it was fun and well worth the several hours in the water. Just a couple shots for the time being.

Grey, rainy and winds gusting to 34knot @ E/ ENE. Majorly long hiatus, followed by a kickass start to the season. Started out disorganized, choppy and burly. Had to duck out mid day, but the latest report was that it cleaned up nice and stayed large. Nice rides and more than few taken on the head. Gauging by the fact that the buoy is still up around 12' at 10pm...and the wind is set to shift offshore, makes it seem like it should be good for a saturday morning session.

Finally some surf up in this joint...and in june no less. Not typical for this time of year in this neck of the woods, but than again who cares about typical versus not typical...it was fun. Stoke-a-mania to be in the water the other evening that's for sure. It's been too long. checkit.




mega lack of posts in the blogging department here at the fresh aspect headquarters as of late...getting things done...not to mention, outdoor time tends to limit screen time. anyways.

Opening day glide

Goodgawd...107 days is way too long to go without surf!! Damn it felt refreshing to finally get in the lake yesterday. I'm pretty confident that that was the sentiment had by all. An early start revealed typical spring like, borderline surfable conditions, but like many sessions, the conditions improved with every set of waves...and correspondingly, so did the intensity of the driving sleet and snow, but hey, you can't have sunshine and lollipops all the time. Four or so hours later and none too worse for wear, stand by the fire...the wrenching pain of a surfless winter eased by the only medication that could remedy the feeling. peace. e

Truth has it, the forecast for the weekend was looking much bigger and more badass than it turned out to be. Almost like winter was on its way. But when you park yourself along with your buds in the right place at the right time, you might just get it good.

Didn't pause long enough to take any half decent photo's yesterday, mostly cause the stoke was running high and i hadn't been in the water in a long time. A few of us enjoyed several hours of clean lines at a spot that is notoriously unclean and not all that fantastic. Anyways, major stokage all around.
