Two weeks into running on these Brooks Pure Grit "minimalist" trail shoe and loving them. Light, lots of flex, grippy, and only 4mm heel-toe offset. Fun shoes that replace my Brooks Cascadia 3's, which were awesome, but long overdue for retirement.

Fun small surf after work on friday, although the water was brown from all the blown out rivers, after a week of rain. Watched this flock of late migrating geese fly low over us while we bobbed around catching some little fun ones.

Cleaning stinging nettles and watching Ryder Hesjedal win the Giro d’Italia....although that's not him in this shot.

Some mushrooms on a log. Not sure that you would want to eat these, but fun to look at.

Much love for Lake Superior. A windy, rainy and gloomy day brought some damn fine waves; especially for this time of year. Thanks mother nature.

John slides along on a cruisey left last night.

Some 'urban' foraging turned up these oyster mushrooms growing on an aspen snag down by the creek.

The little man enjoying a warm day by the lake, throwing sticks.

Changing seasons...mushroom picking, mushroom observing. Walks in the woods with the family; sit around the fire. Cold nights, shortening days. Wool sweaters. Pack away quality local foods in jars and freezer for times ahead. Hunter gatherer mentality sets in.

Not sure what this guys is; but it's rad looking.

Ahhh...pip pip....'british soldiers' as they're called.

Gathering

Surf? Yes please.

We forage and we like it!
Awesome mushroom hunt the other day, yielded some choice edibles.

Lobster mushrooms (Hypomyces lactifluorum)...(Note: a mushroom but not actually a mushroom; rather a parasitic ascomycete that grows on the Russula and Lactarius species). Same color as their namesake and seafoody tasting as well.

AhhYEAH! Golden Chanterelles (Cantharellus cibarius). So incredibly stoked to have found this stash.

A fresh home cooked creation using all local foods.

Pretty much a 100 mile diet last sunday night:

Garden fresh potatoes grown in a pail in our backyard, fresh walleye that i caught, garden coleslaw (carrots and cabbage from Boreal Edge Farm), our tomatoes, local corn on the cob, fresh picked comb tooth and pig's ear mushrooms and green and yellow beans (some from our yard, some from Boreal Edge).
I love this time of year.

Now if only we could get some surf up in this. Of course, that might happen this weekend while i am out of town....that would only make sense. Not bitter about the lack of surf...nope, not bitter all (couldn't be more sarcastic).

To the woods we go.

A basket full of treats:
Pigs ear, Comb tooth, L.subglabripes and Aspsopp

the foragers...
(note the ecstatic look of the women on the cover of the field guide)

Comb tooth (Hericium coralloides) prior to saute event

Leccinum subglabripes...awaiting the drying rack.

While some are better left alone on the forest floor

The ole b-log has been sitting idle, but my body, mind and shutter have not. Been out on the water, doing what i do and enjoying it. What a beautiful start to September. A short recap to start the week off:

Glassy calm mornings

Blue sky, head off to work

Release a beauty of a lake trout...955mm (or 37.6''for the metrically challenged) and well over 20lbs.

Take in the clouds up side down.

Unexpectedly find a small shwack of chanterelles.

Watch the sun go down as we finish up.

Post script...do note that the chanterelles were NOT found on the same day or location as the release of the magnificent LT. Seriously...how good do you think a day at work could possibly be.

A few reasons among many to love fall.

First outright birdy experience for Lutsen. Between thrashing fish and thumping grouse, he was going mental with excitement. Good times.
