My summer vacation. By Eric Berglund....well, just some fun shots from the start of it. Some time well spent out at the lake with Nance's family and some time rocking out at my sis's wedding festivities. In a way, it was just like summer vacation, i.e. not having to work for a few days; although i'm a firm believer that after work and on the weekends, it is still summer vacation. Oh yeah and hey, if there is a surf god out there, will you please bring us some waves here on the lake sometime well before next christmas. Thanks.

This is Fly Daily turned out a story from CBC News about lakes across Canada being turned into mine dump sites - the day after that article was released the fisheries minister, Loyola Hearn came back with dumping mining waste into water is “more responsible”. Who paid him off to say that?

“Although the Fisheries Act prevents the disposal of harmful substances into fish-bearing waters, an inconspicuous subsection of the mining effluent regulations known as Schedule Two allows federal bureaucrats to redefine lakes as “tailings impoundment areas.”

Where it applies, the regulation effectively absolves mining companies from having to build man-made containment ponds removed from natural water systems, allowing them to dump toxic mine tailings directly into reclassified lakes.”

Oyster Mushroom

Didn't realize these shrooms could be consumed until i flipped through my new mushroom guide "Mushrooms of the Boreal Forest" By: Eugene F. Bossenmaier the other day. Handy little guide by the way, featuring more than 200 species of mushrooms and fungi found throughout the boreal forest, ranging from Alaska to Ontario and Minnesota.

Might need to go back out and see if we can find these guys again. Got Lutsen out solo in the canoe this eve. Paddled for a good hour and he pretty much chilled right out, after a short episode of trying to bail out over the gunwales. Winston slid on water with his new standup paddle-board setup, good excerise for the flat summer conditions around here ..might have been the first SUP on Boulevard lake . Nice night to be outside.

FOR THOSE WHO LIKE IT FISHEY 
A native brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), from a jaunt afield earlier in June.  Quite a hog for BT standards.

Otherwise, if anyone out there needs instruction on how to dig a big hole in their basement floor and install a sump pit...give me a ring.  Honestly, not nearly as scary as i had expected.

Summer Solstice Hombre's!!

Summer? Uh, yeah, it doesn't quite feel like summer around here; except for maybe the bugs. Venture out into the bush and expect there to be a blood bath, cause it aint pretty, that's for certain. I guess it did manage to warm up enough at mid day, that it was actually pretty hot while out for my run. Hot even, imagine that. OK..so maybe it feels a bit like summer...the surf sure is flat enough. Lutsen strikes the old age of 14 weeks on Sunday and is only getting smarter and my sis gets married in two weeks from today...aka. party. Otherwise, life rolls on. See what we get up to this weekend. woot.

Sweet wild edibles!! Morchella elata, morel mushrooms of the northern woods. Came upon these guys this morning after first spotting some false morels. All within about a 100 meters of a 400+ lbs black bear chowing down on a moose carcass. Wild times in wild places. Cooked these sweeties up with a little butter and shared them with Nance as an appetizer before dinner....zing!

I guess since it is technically still spring, the ridiculous incessant rain might be expected. Wet wet and wet. But also green, very green, and every creek and river at capacity. I use to surf, when the wind managed to blow from the same direction for more than 2 hours at a time. Seems like, that with each of these low pressure systems, comes swirling winds, from one extreme to the next. But,whatever, life is pretty dam sweet none the less. Turn the volume on and listen to the river gurgle as this beaut catches his breath.


Oh man, what a sandwich...epiclly delicious...
gets your mojo going at those critical times.

80mm of rain on friday...flash flooding, roads washing out, rivers and creeks higher that many people have ever seen. Thought we'd score some waves on saturday morning...lugged the 10' longboard 2.3km into the promising beach...and...nothing..stupidity and optimism on my part. Ditched the board, while Nance and i walked Lutsen just over 8km's. What a trooper. I could have been bummed about not getting waves, but it was too darn nice out. Anyways, hope somebody got some, somewhere.

Seems like ye ole steelhead season has come to an unofficial close....ie the 12, 14 hour missions will cease, although the pictures may not. Perhaps an evening jaunt close to town, but that's about it for steel and obviously some wild brook trout to be pursued. Only a few chromers on the weekend, but a pile of lake trout. Collected some ferns and various other wild plants for the garden on saturday morning.. garden is primed...searching out morels, with minimal luck thus far and digging this season called spring.
